This Grenade Will Love You - Demo

*Very rough demo above*

This is a new song added to our E.P. list. It's a fast one with a country/blues feel to it. The guitar is in an open D tuning. Leslie does a great piano riff over the verse while Daniela keeps a steady rolling beat throughout with brushes that's not too overpowering. I still need to work out the bass which always changes the entire color of a song, maybe this weekend over a few beers. Regarding the lyrics, I think we've all been close to someone like the person in this song at sometime. I've known far too many.

This Grenade Will Love You

Verse #1
I have to hide, have to crawl,
Deep inside your heart,
After everything you've done.
I travel wide, can’t escape,
Those words like butcher’s knives.
The past, a rising tide.

Chorus
Conversations playing ‘round,
My empty head, both soft and loud.
This grenade will love you,
You say, this grenade will love you,
Each and every time.

Verse#2
Echoes in the night, and you lose your mind,
And you drown yourself in light,
Then watch all sorrows taking flight.
Leaving you here, a ship without a wheel,
And you’re anchored to the vine.
Oh grenade, tell me that you’re mine.

Chorus
Conversations playing round,
My empty head, both soft and loud.
This grenade will love you,
You say, this grenade will love you,
Each and every time.

Middle Eight
It’s a shame you’re going nowhere,
Can’t move forward, cant remember.
A troubled heart sleeps, a troubled heart sleeps,
and it floats in cheap wine.

Chorus
Conversations playing round,
My empty head, both soft and loud.
In libation's wake we sail,
Try deny it, I'll see you in hell.
This grenade will love you,
You say, this grenade will love you,
Each and every time.

Rehearsal #5

Last night was a dry practice, as in no alcohol whatsoever. It was an off night, it happens. I could not get a single good tone out of my guitar, I may have to change the strings already. Maybe a trip to Main Drag Music for a seasonal set up is on the cards.

We went over 'Stop This Madness' which may or may not make the cut. I'm unsure myself if only that it doesn't blend well with the other songs.

Other song possibilities are 'Goodbye Old Friend' and maybe an acoustic version of 'Haunted House' which is at least fun to play. I need to record a demo of the first for next rehearsal.

No rehearsal for Two weeks. In the meantime Daniela is looking into a Studio & Producer she used before. I need to start putting together prices and a time frame for recording.

And that is the progress so far.

Rehearsal #4

Last Thursday's rehearsal was a lot of fun. Daniela was an hour and a half late due to work which turned out to be a blessing. Leslie and I were able to work on 'Everywhere', a very old song that I had not got a chance to write out the music for. Leslie is classically trained whereas I am self thought which always makes for some interesting exchanges.

- It's 'C' but up a bit and there is this thing, wait, that, what is that Leslie?
- So it's a C seventh minor.
- Yeah sure okay, that and then this but it's also a little over here too.
- What's the bass note?
- Um, this?
- Oh so it's not a 'C' it's an 'F'.
- Okay it's in 'F' then.
- Sigh!

Leslie really done her homework this week and had worked up some amazing piano pieces for 'Everywhere' and 'This Grenade Will Love You'. 'This Grenade Will Love You' and 'Wherever We Are' are standing out as the stronger tracks. They definitely are the songs we enjoy playing more.

I think that after this E.P. is done, if Daniela and Leslie are still willing to record music we will see a more collaborative effort being made. It will be interesting to see how this band grows over the next year or so.

After this rehearsal the lesson learned was: Whiskey brings out the best in everyone. Fact.

Infinite Companion

I had a bunch of plans for Sunday, most of which was to work on material for Supersmall. Unfortunately the sorry sight of this guitar (Yamaha F-310) crumbling away in the corner won over my heart. This guitar has immense sentimental value to me. When living in Perth, Australia I found it in a pawn shop for AUS$50 dollars. It helped me get through some long periods of unemployment and horrible temp jobs. I wrote songs on the balcony and kept the neighbors awake with drunken singing at night along with my mate Stephen. Upon arriving in Melbourne I started playing in bars and venues around the city. It was dropped, stood upon, kicked, punched (frustration - knuckle print still visible) and had beer spilled on it but it never let me down. I bring it everywhere, it is my infinite companion. It needs some serious work but I patched it up for now, unfortunately it cost me most of my Sunday.

Saturday, April 7th, 2012.

Plans for the weekend include writing out the music for 'This Grenade Will Love You'. This will be difficult as I have no idea what key it's even in. I de-tuned my guitar as an experiment to "find" new sounds/music and the song wrote itself in about 10 minutes. A strange and rare happening but I like it. I've never played it live or to anyone outside of Supersmall. It has a country folk feel to it. Anyway, I'll need two guitars to get it done, one de-tuned and one in correct tuning.

I'm also working on a new song. I've been very productive lately and I want to get as much done while I'm in this space. I have the melody, first verse and chorus complete. It's currently titled "It's Just The Way It's Meant To Be". It's an odd folk song about obsession, maybe it will work, maybe it won't.

I also need to rewrite a song called Refractory Space. Daniela gave me lyrics to work into a song and when it was completed I had ventured too far from the point of the song, so I got to reign it back a bit. I like the melody so if the song doesn't work out I'll keep the tune for another day.

Next rehearsal is this Thursday. The aim is to get two other songs finished.

2nd Rehearsal

Two rehearsals in and we have the first Three songs for the E.P. confirmed pretty much. We intend on recording five tracks in total which leaves us with two more to choose. Currently I'm thinking Everywhere and This Grenade Will Love You. I feel pretty good about the progress so far. The drums and piano really bring out the songs and having two additional inputs is invaluable. I need to start writing out the final baselines and the little guitar parts. Anyway, I plan on keeping track of our progress from the beginning to the final CD. I hope to repeat the process again sometime in the future and perhaps reading back over this will help.
